All the iOS devices will soon be getting support for vertical video playback on YouTube. Until now, trying to play these vertical videos on iOS devices resulted in big black bars due to the app’s inability to adjust to the unique size. The new version, in comparison, features automatic adaption.
Android users have enjoyed this functionality for a while now. This capability has been available on the platform for two years now.
Bye bye, black bars. 👋
Now the YouTube player on iOS will automatically adapt to the shape of the video you’re viewing! pic.twitter.com/4jzJ6nPj4G

The vertical video will fill up the screen with whatever space is remaining below-containing video descriptions, actions and watch suggestions. Tapping the full-screen icon adjusts to the shape of the video, lets the vertical video take up the entire display. The new feature not only adapts to fit the video but also automatically shrinks when the user scrolls down to read comments and view related videos.
The new feature will be rolling out as a server-side update.
