At a time when the prices of smartphones are sky-rocketing, Xiaomi has brought a budget smartphone for the Indian market. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 which was unveiled earlier in China is a successor of the hugely popular smartphone Redmi 4. The device is available in three variants in India. The 2GB RAM+ 16GB storage variant is priced at Rs 7,999, while the 3GBRAM+ 32GB storage and 4GB RAM+ 64GB storage variants will retail for Rs 8,999 and Rs 10,999 respectively. The Redmi 5 will go on sale starting March 20, and will be available in black, gold, lake blue and rose gold colours exclusively on Mi.com, Amazon India and Xiaomi's offline partner channels.
Coming to the specifications, the smartphone sports a 5.7-inch HD+ LCD display with a resolution of 1440×720 pixels, and support for taller 18:9 aspect ratio. The smartphone is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 450 chipset. The device also comes with Adreno 506 GPU, which is a major improvement over Redmi 4.

In terms of optics, the device features a 12-megapixel rear camera with 1.25-micron pixels, f/2.2 aperture, PDAF, HDR, and LED flash. On the front, it bears a 5-megapixel camera with an LED selfie light, face recognition and Smart Beauty 3.0 app. The fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back. The dual-SIM smartphone runs on MIUI 9 based on Android 7.0 Nougat and is backed by a 3,300mAh battery, which can easily last a day with normal usage.
Other features include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS, and a 3.5mm audio jack. Sensors on board the Redmi 5 include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyroscope, and proximity sensor.
The handset maker is offering attractive discounts as a part of its promotional offer. Redmi 5 launch offers include an instant Rs 2,200 cashback from Reliance Jio with 100GB of additional data and a 5 percent discount on Amazon India and Mi.com using SBI credit cards. Users will also get 90 percent off on their first Kindle eBooks purchase (up to Rs. 400). Buyers will get a free ultra-slim cover with the purchase of the smartphone.
