Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is back with the next iteration of its much-acclaimed Mi Mix series- Mi Mix 2. Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Mi Mix, the Chinese smartphone maker has once again collaborated with Philippe Starck's design studio to bring us yet another ceramic device with a near-bezel-less display with a slightly smaller six-inch display and improved 18:9 screen resolution.
The device features Qualcomm's top-of-the-range Snapdragon 835 chipset along with 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage. There's also a special edition with a whopping 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
In terms of optics, there is a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 sensor with 1.25-micron pixels, 4-axis optical image stabilisation, 5-piece lens, an f/2.0 aperture, as well as a facial recognition feature. It can also shoot 4K or 1080p video at 30 fps, and 720p video at up to 120 fps for slow motion. On the front, it bears a 5-megapixel selfie camera with a facial recognition function.
Xiaomi has once again opted for a piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology setup to minimize the speaker, but unlike Mi Mix, this time it actually occupies some space on the device rather than being buried last year, which had caused some audio issues. Interestingly, the Mix 2 supports 43 bands, thus making it a truly global smartphone.
Mi Mix 2 is powered by a 3,400mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support (9V/2A) via USB-C. As a bonus, both editions come with a 18K PVD rose gold-coated camera rim, while the special edition gets the same rim treatment on its rear-facing fingerprint reader.
Connectivity options include 4G LTE, dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) Wi-Fi 802.11ac, GPS/ A-GPS, Bluetooth v5.0, and USB Type-C. Sensors on board are an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, digital compass, gyroscope, and ultrasonic proximity sensor.
As for the pricing, Mi Mix 2 starts from 3299 yuan (about $500 or Rs 32,000 plus on conversion ) for the 64GB of storage and 6GB of RAM model. The 128GB version costs 3599 yuan ($550 or Rs 35,000 plus on conversion), meanwhile, and the 256GB model will be 3999 yuan ($610 or Rs 39,000 plus on conversion); the unibody ceramic special edition with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage is priced at 4699 yuan ($720 or Rs 45,000 plus on conversion).
The release date of Mi Mix 2 launch in India has not been disclosed but, is expected to arrive soon.
