While the world is reeling under a massive ransomware attack affecting over 100 countries, another hacking plot seems to be underway in the Hollywood. No, it isn't some Steven Speilberg movie based on cyber-attack, rather a cyber-attack on a movie itself. What an irony!
Pirates of the Caribbean pirated!
In a rather ironic state of affairs, hackers seem to have got a hold of a copy of upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean film. According to The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, they are now demanding a ransom from Disney or else they release the movie online.
According to the reports, Disney CEO Bob Iger told his employees that a group of hackers claim to have access to a copy of one of its upcoming movies and are asking for a ransom to return the same.
When Netflix' Orange is the New Black was released online
The developments appear to closely follow a recent hacking plot when a hacking group by the name "thedarkoverlord" posted episodes from Netflix's upcoming season of Orange is the New Black online after Netflix refused the ransom.
The hackers are reportedly asking for a huge ransom in Bitcoin which would obviously make it difficult to trace.
Pirates coming next week
The next instalment of the hugely popular franchise- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is supposedly releasing next week, May 26 and we are sure Disney wouldn't want the hacking attempt to affect its box-office collections.
Apparently, the company has refused to pay and has begun working with the FBI.
