Things are only getting bleaker for Uber as it gets embroiled in yet another lawsuit. A woman referred to as Jane Doe who says she was raped by an Uber driver is suing the company for allegedly ignoring previous warnings about the driver's violent and criminal history.
The victim, a post-graduate student from Kansas City says she was raped by an Uber driver named Yahkhahnahn Ammi on January 28th, 2017. The incident was reported to Kansas City Police Department, which has collected the evidence and currently investigating the matter. Ammi has not been arrested as yet and was driving for Uber as recently as 20th March 2017.
A spokesperson for Uber said,"What's reported in the complaint is deeply troubling and something we take extremely serious. we are reviewing the litigation. Ammi was driving for Uber but was recently deactivated".
On December 26, a few weeks before Doe was molested another female person filed domestic abuse charges against Ammi. The woman submitted a report to Uber in which she said, " Your driver YAHKHAHNAHN ‘Yah’ Ammi assaulted someone badly 12/25/16!! He hurt the woman badly! He has a warrant out for his arrest. He is a scam artist his real name is Perrie D. Gibson born 8/21/79 or 78 it is not safe to allow your riders to ride with him!!".
On the night Doe was raped, Ammi previously forcefully tried to exchange contact information so that he could give her and her friends a ride later after they attended a concert. When he dropped her home, he entered her apartment claiming to use the washroom and refused to leave, allegedly raping her.
The lawsuit also has negligent hiring and retention along with negligence and fraudulent concealment in charges against Uber because apparently, the company was previously made aware of the threat Ammi posed but did not take any action.
This lawsuit is just another one added to Uber's long list of problems. The company is being currently sued by a woman who was raped by a driver in India after reports surfaced that top executive at Uber Eric Alexander obtained her medical records. Uber is currently conducting a massive investigation into its workplace culture and ethics and is committed to improving the relations between the driver and riders.
It was in light of all these events that the company saw several resignations and finally, even CEO Travis Kalanick had to step down.
