Cars have become more than the sum total of cost, mileage and design factor. Technology has changed this automobile segment into a platform for new innovation every day. Just like smartphones, people today want smart cars.
From autopilot system-automatic steering, automatic lane change, side collision warning, and automatic parallel parking to holographic dashboards or windshields, car makers, and tech companies are innovating in ever newer ways to make smart and cool cars.
Here are five super innovations to look for in the world of cars.
- Mercedes Autonomous Drive
The new E-Class with better driver-assistance systems features a wide -screen digital dashboard which can be controlled by thumb pads on the steering wheel. The sedan takes the concept of autonomous driving a notch higher. This Merc model can park itself and drive to its owner via a smartphone app. The car can self-drive on highways at speeds up to 130 miles per hour using the Drive Pilot feature. In addition, when it’s in autonomous mode, the E-class will change lanes with a tip of the turn-signal stalk.
- Nissan’s zero-emission electric vehicle system
Geneva International Motor Show saw Nissan teaming up with Foster + Partners to conceptualize a future where cars that run on renewable sources of energy like sun, water and wind will charge wirelessly. The presentation was a product of companies' year-long project to redesign electric car fuel stations.
However what Nissan and Foster came up with was not a physical station, but an innovative concept that the cars could themselves be used to store and distribute renewable energy along a "smart street". This energy could then be used to power homes. Nissan released a two-minute movie at the event to showcase its intelligent mobility concept.
- Hydrogen-fueled engines
Toyota and Honda already have their hydrogen fuel models out as Mirai and FCX Clarity respectively. Honda’s model Clarity was, in fact, the pioneer in the segment back in 2008. Audi and Lexus joined this group at the North American International Auto Show in January with their hydrogen fuel cell prototypes.
With zero carbon emission, this energy efficient car does hold a lot of promise in the times of Global warming for future. However high costs and lack of hydrogen fuel stations could prove roadblocks in its popularity.
- Augmented Exteriors
LED headlights, Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication, touchpad door handles are few of the features ready to revolutionize the automotive industry. If Buick’sAvista has hidden touchpad door handles, Ford is experimenting with V2V communication to lower down road accidents.
Avista is also coming up with a glass roof, a popular feature, also part of Faraday Future’s FFZERO1 and the Chevrolet Bolt. Other innovations include the lighter, more aerodynamic design of the newest Ford GT.
- More than just interiors
Air touch screens with a large panoramic display, ionic air purifiers, better sound performance, steering wheel cum touch pads will be there in your cars sooner than you think. All these additions and features have not only transformed the automobile industry into the high-tech business driven by latest technology and innovation but have completely revolutionized the car driving experience.
