Snapchat has revealed its new 3D stickers that can be pinned to objects in a video and will stick with them no matter how they or your camera move. The move is expected to bring in some more fun and creativity to Snapchat’s users. The feature that was rolled out on Android yesterday came with a piece of good news for the self-destructing photo and video sharing service as well. According to a study done by Piper Jaffray, Snapchat has surpassed Instagram as the social media bae among teenagers.
In the bi-annual “Taking Stock With Teens” study, Snapchat took 28 percent of the votes for the most important social network among 6,350 U.S. teenagers surveyed, who averaged around 17 years of age. That number is up from the 19 percent who sided with Snapchat in the Fall 2015 survey, and more importantly, meant that the mobile app had surpassed Instagram, which had 27 percent of the vote this round compared with 33 percent last fall.
The new augmented reality feature is surely going to add to those numbers. To use 3D Stickers, just record a video, tap the sticker button at the top of the screen, place your sticker over the object you want to stick it to, and long-press on the sticker.
Through its animated lens and now 3D stickers, Snapchat is pushing the limits of what can be done with a video app. While Facebook is still trying to catch up by acquiring animated lens maker MSQRD, Snapchat is already on to the next innovation that could attract teen users looking to give their social media some flare.
