After being the only prosperous entrepreneur amid this lockdown, Mukesh Ambani recently launched Jio Meet. This was a take on Zoom to make an Indian video call app. The app already has over 1 million downloads, there is something we can't but notice. It is the same copy as Zoom. And we are talking about the UI, structure and placements of icons.
It was as bad when Reliance was ridiculed on Jio Meet's launch, but the Twitterati haven't stopped talking about it. So here is the question, is this just a marketing gimmick, to help people easily transition from Zoom to Jio Meet? Or, Reliance made a deal with Zoom? The developer just copy-pasted the code from GitHub? Or is it White Labelling?
Besides this, JioMeet didn’t even put much effort into changing the iOS interface of the app. It used the same icons for New Meeting, Join, Schedule and Share Screen as Zoom.
Here's a tweet from a person, who compared all the features of Jio Meet to Zoom.
Will this invite legal implications?
As of now, Zoom has not sent any legal notice to Reliance. Although, Zoom has responded to the competition through a statement. It said that the company welcomes the competition from JioMeet, as per BGR. It wrote:
Zoom has experienced intense competition since it was established in 2011, and yet we have become the platform of choice for millions of participants around the world. We know what it takes to become the unified communications platform we are today, including the immense amount of work and focus required to create our frictionless user experience, sophisticated security, and scalable architecture.
White Labelling Zoom
Several Netizens have asked if it is white labelling. White labelling is when a product or service removes its brand and logo from the end product. Instead, it uses the branding requested by the purchaser. Here, in case, the speculation is whether Jio had a white label contract with Zoom.
Now, white labelling is done at the customers' end. This is to help them establish a relationship with the company and trust them to know what kind of a product they need. It helps the user to go through a smooth transition.
Timely Launch of Jio Meet
We don't know why Jio Meet copies Zoom, but given the recent bans on 59 Chinese apps, some people welcome the move. This may be due to Indians confusing the origin of the app to be Chinese as the founder, Eric Yuan is. But he confirmed to was US-made. Although, it did invite some controversy as it re-routed through China.
So, at least no one can question the Jio Meet 's launch timing. Because, Jio had assured Indians that it was working on a Made-In-India variant of the Zoom app. This is a special relief for the Indian government that has been looking for solutions for video conferencing.
Some support this move, some oppose
Netizens even state that this might be a good move. China always copies stuff from the world and Indians are happy as Reliance takes a dig at Zoom. Here's what Netizens are talking about the app.
