Google has pulled down Paytm from the Play Store for violating its gambling policies. One of India's most valuable startup, the digital payments app claims to have over 50 million monthly active users. Thus, it's sudden removal from PlayStore has caused a problem with a large Paytm user fanbase. Although Paytm has assured that the money of all users is safe, the netizens want to know why it happened.

Why is Paytm removed from the Google Play Store?

Google said that the Play Store prohibits online casinos and other unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting in India. Paytm, which promotes fantasy sports service within its PaytmFirst Games app, has repeatedly violated Play Store’s policies. Google also said that if an app leads consumers to an external website that allows them to participate in paid tournaments to win real money or cash prizes is also in violation of its Play Store policies.

Google had notified the pay tm developers a few days back on this issue. Further, it is in constant touch with them regarding the app. Suzanne Frey, Google's VP-Product, Android Security and Privacy, underlined the problem. She said:

“We have these policies to protect users from potential harm. When an app violates these policies, we notify the developer of the violation and remove the app from Google Play until the developer brings the app into compliance. And in the case where there are repeated policy violations, we may take more serious action which may include terminating Google Play Developer accounts.”

She further added that Google has the same goals for our gambling policy. They don’t allow online casinos or support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting.

In short...

Google does not promote gambling or fantasy sports. Until Paytm and First Games resolve the issue of not promoting online betting, the app will stand suspended.
