In its latest guidelines, the Ministry of Home Affairs said that all activities, except those specifically prohibited, are now open. The list does not include Cab riding as a prohibited service. This means that online-cab aggregators like Ola and Uber can now accept rides even in Red Zones.
Ola and Uber open up
Uber, in a blog post, mentioned:
In compliance with Lockdown 4.0 guidelines by the Government, Uber is resuming services across more cities in India. Riders will constantly be notified with further information and the status of specific cities through our app.
On the other hand, Ola said,
As per the latest guidelines issued by various State Government today, driver-partners operating three and four-wheelers on the platform will be available to serve mobility needs on the Ola app, with the highest levels of safety precautions in the states of Karnataka, Telangana, Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu (except Chennai), Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Assam.
How many cities are they covering?
With the 10 new cities, Uber will be available in a total of 35 cities in the country. The company had earlier resumed operations in 25 cities. These will include Gurugram, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Guwahati, Kochi, Udaipur, Vapi and Visakhapatnam. Besides, Uber said that Uber Essential, their delivery service portal for essential items, is available in Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, Indore, Mumbai, and Nashik through the Uber app.
On the other hand, Ola has resumed normal ride operations in more than 160 cities with enhanced safety protocols. These will apply to every trip as per the state governments guidelines.
What will be ride protocols?
These protocols include:
- Drivers and passengers have to compulsorily wear masks
- Cab-owners have to sanitise cars post-trips
- All members have to adhere to social distancing norms
- Also, cabs will allow only two passengers per ride
- Bike rides will still be not allowed
