In a bid to further personalise the online experience, Google-owned YouTube will start showing Indian users content in their local languages on 'Home' and 'Trending' tabs.
The language preference is based on a combination of factors including user’s interface language, watch history, and location. YouTube will automatically identify the preferred Indian language - from Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu - and display more content in that language on Home.
As for the Trending tab, it will show videos that are popular with other users with similar language preferences.
In case, YouTube has identified the wrong language, users can change their language or continue to watch more videos in the preferred language, after which YouTube will gradually correct itself.
Marcel Gordon, Product Manager, YouTube said, "We are excited to help more Indians find content in their local languages, especially those who are coming online for the first time. We hope this will make their experience even more engaging and relevant. We’re equally excited to help regional content creators reach audiences in their local languages more quickly.”
Starting today, the update will be rolled out to all the users.
