Nokia and Samsung today decided to share 'certain additional patent portfolios' together, after the companies agreed to extend their patent licensing agreement in February this year.

While Nokia said that this will reinforce Nokia's leadership in technologies for the programmable world, but Nokia seems to be more upbeat on the financial outcome of it. It expects a positive impact of this expansion to the Q3 net sales of Nokia Technologies this year.

This expanded patent sharing agreement with Samsung will also help Nokia Technologies' annualized net sales related to patent and brand licensing to grow to around EUR 950 million by the end of 2016, expects Nokia.

"With intellectual property portfolios from Nokia Technologies, Nokia Networks and Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia has a wealth of technologies relevant to mobile devices and beyond," said Ramzi Haidamus, president of Nokia Technologies.

Nokia will continue to pursue new licensing opportunities across a number of diverse industries as well, said Haidamus.

Additionally, Nokia has also signed brand and IP licensing agreement this year with HMD global to return to mobile devices market again. Foxconn subsidiary FIH has already acquired Nokia’s feature phone business from Microsoft as a part of this comeback plan.
