Ministry of Human Resource Development has released the NIRF Ranking 2020 for top colleges in the country. Along with an overall score, they have also released the NIRF Engineering Rankings 2020 for Top Engineering Colleges in the country.
Ever since its beginning, IIT Madras has managed to keep the spot as India’s top engineering college and IIT Delhi & Bombay have fought for the second spot. Interestingly, from 2016, IIT Madras has been the unbeaten number 1.
IIT Delhi, however, has shown a steady rise from No. 4 in 2016 to No. 2 in 2019, beating IIT Kharagpur and IIT Bombay, respectively.
The NIRF was instituted in 2015 with the purpose of providing a nationalized ranking parameter for the institute of higher learning in the country. Starting in 2016, NIRF ranked colleges and universities in 4 categories. In 2019, the number of categories was increased to 8 and an overall ranking was also released. Incidentally, IIT Madras was top even in the overall category.
What are the categories?
NIRF rankings, going by 2019 lists, will be released for nine categories - Overall rankings, University, Engineering, College, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Architecture, and Medical.
The number of institutes which participated in the rankings has increased by 20% this year. This year about 3800 institutes applied for the rankings. Also, the first year for ranking of Dental institutes.
Parameters
NIRF Ranking 2020 are awarded based on the following parameters - Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.
