“Windows 10 represents a new generation of Windows, built for an era of more personal computing,” Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft, said during a keynote speech. “Today’s consumers and corporate workers want to have the same experience when they are using a variety of devices.”

"Windows 10 is not just another release of Windows, but a new generation of Windows," he said. "The tech business is about being able to know before it is conventional wisdom that that is where the market is going and knowing that you can get there first, get there with the best innovation."

“Our goal is to make Windows 10 the most attractive development platform ever,” Terry Myerson, Microsoft, said.

He predicted there will be a billion devices using Windows 10 within the next two to three years. Apps for all those devices will be distributed through a single Windows app store. Myerson also said Microsoft will partner with wireless carriers so consumers who lack credit cards can pay for apps on their phone bill a popular method in developing nations.

In another first, the software giant called upon developers to explore and write codes and develop apps for Windows 10; providing them access to same apps they are using on Apple or Android phones.

In doing so, Microsoft wants the developers to adapt the apps they have built for Apple or Android gadgets, to work on smart phones, PCs and other devices that use the new Windows 10 operating system, expected to launch end 2015. The company said that the apps for Windows 10 will work on PCs, mobile gadgets, Xbox game consoles and even the HoloLens.
