SpaceX, Alphabet's Google, Shopify, and Tesla are among the most appealing companies for tech-based workers, according to a survey by online jobs marketplace Hired. Hired surveyed 2,349 people who use its platform and said candidates were looking not just for good salary but also to develop new skills and be part of a company with a strong culture that reflected their values.

“Employees are more interested in working for companies that cater to what they value most,” Hired wrote in a post accompanying the study. “Value is subjective to each candidate’s preference and can be defined as compensation and benefits, company culture, or the opportunity to learn new skills; and thanks to new options, the ways candidates can assess value are continuing to grow.”

Notable exclusions from the list include Amazon, Uber, and Airbnb. However, Amazon did come at number 3 in hometown Seattle just ahead of Microsoft. Out of the top 10 companies, only two companies- Shopify and Atlassian were based outside California. The report also says that tech giants like Facebook and Google have an established presence in Montreal, Toronto, and Kitchener-Waterloo.

The survey was conducted with an exclusive pool of talent of software engineers, product managers, design and data scientists to determine which companies interest them most. The candidates were provided with an opportunity to select from a list of local companies as well as write-in companies that they found attractive which were headquartered in another city.

Google was ranked the most attractive employer in SF Bay Area while Boeing was ranked number one in Chicago. Squarespace was ranked best in New York and Trip Advisor in Boston. To know how the companies stack up city wise, read the Hired report here.
