After announcing a massive layoff of 3,200 employees last year, Lenovo is at it again this year. Though the figure apparently isn’t as big this time, it’s still a significant number.
Confirming the report, the company says that the layoffs impact “less than 2 percent of its 55,000 employees” across the world with a majority of the layoffs from the mobile phone division, Moto.
Lenovo is yet to confirm the exact number of layoffs.
According to the Verge report, the most current round of layoffs “are part of the ongoing strategic integration between Lenovo and its Motorola smartphone business as the company further, aligns its organization and streamlines its product portfolio to best compete in the global smartphone market.”
However, despite the significant layoffs, the company is still intending to keep its Motorola Mobility headquarters in Chicago, denying rumours that it may move the remaining staff to North Carolina where Lenovo has other offices.
One of the now-former employees took to Facebook to confirm the news, saying that he has been with the company for over 20 years and his last day will be this Friday.
"While these actions are never easy, they are a necessary part of our continued efforts to ensure long-term, profitable growth across all of our businesses," the company said in its layoff statement.
