Looks like its time up for ‘ports’ in Apple’s iPhone. After the headphone jack, the next in line could be the lightning charging port to bid goodbye to the iconic iPhone.
Wondering what makes us say so? Read on. Apple is now a member of the Wireless Power Consortium whose website was recently updated to feature Apple as one of the 213 members, lending fuel to rumours that iPhone’s next iteration could come with wireless charging.
Wireless charging isn’t new to Apple. Apple Watch already works with a magnetic cable that charges your device wirelessly but this is the first concrete evidence that the feature might soon extend to iPhones too.
Though initially the technology did face some technical glitches but has matured over the past few years and Apple’s move to join the consortium shows that it is gearing up to take the next big step.
Meanwhile, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities, known for his reliable forecasting for Apple product releases, also said that the next iPhone should feature the lightning port plus wireless charging.
With many companies such as Samsung, LG, Huawei, HTC and Qualcomm already part of Wireless Power Consortium, I don’t know if we can derive much out of the new joiner’s prospects and plans.
The company is expected to release three high-end iPhones around September this year but it’s unclear if all iPhones or just the top model will feature wireless charging.
