As a part of its efforts to curb online trolling, Instagram now allows you to choose who can comment on your photos. The company is also adding new kindness stickers, better comment filtering, and anonymous live reporting.
The company's blog post notes that "it is trying to keep Instagram a safe and positive place for self-expression". The new comment tools mean that now you can limit comments to a specific group of people, including your followers and people you may know. People with public accounts can now choose who can comment on their posts, from everyone to just specific groups. And those with private accounts can now block certain accounts from commenting on their posts. This feature can be accessed through the Comments section in the Settings menu.
Another new update is 'Kindness Stickers' – heart-shaped stickers in Instagram Stories. The company is also updating its mental health resources with a new anonymous reporting feature for live video. This feature allows users to report when a broadcaster looks like they may need outside support. They'll then see a message with links to resources, including a helpline. The reporting tool can be accessed by clicking on three dots in the comments bar on top of the screen.
Additionally, Instagram has updated its feature that allows users to block offensive comments, expanding the filter to Arabic, Portuguese, French, and German besides English.
