Indian carriers don’t offer Internet on flights which are often quite frustrating for passengers. But this may soon change for better as the government is considering allowing WiFi on board.
Aviation secretary R.N. Choubey on Wednesday said (via Livemint), that the question of allowing WiFi connectivity on board Indian flights has been taken up with the concerned departments and some significant announcement on the matter may be made soon.“There is broad understanding and expect to give you good news in 10 days,” he said.
Indian Airlines currently do not offer WiFi on board due to security concerns. Also, carriers say offering the service is too expensive for them.
Choubey, however, said there would be no caps on pricing if the service is allowed and it would be at the carrier’s discretion. Post the announcement, they must decide if providing WiFi in the skies is profitable for them or not and act accordingly.
