Facebook announced a couple of months ago that it has a daily active user count of 2 billion users, out of which 184 million users are from India alone. At that time, India accounted for second largest Facebook audience behind the US. However, now the spots have got exchanged and India now has the largest Facebook user base. As on July 13, Facebook reported a daily audience of 241 million active users in India, compared to 240 million users in the US.
According to The Next Web contributor Simon Kemp, active users in India are up by 27 percent(+50 million users) in the past six months, compared to 12 percent(+26 million users) growth in the US in the same period. New Delhi has the most number of users from India with 15 million daily users.
The TNW report also claims gender imbalance of Facebook users in India. The report says that Indian men represent three-quarters(76 percent) of the Facebook user profiles. While in the US, 54 percent of the total user base is women. Facebook’s active users in India also skew towards young, with more than half of the country’s users below the age of 25.
Despite such high number of users, social media penetration in India remains quite low with just 19 percent of the country's population using the social media platform compared to 73 percent population in the US.
Besides India and US, other countries with high Facebook user base are Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
