Weeks after disabling the touch function in the Google Home Mini device, the company is bringing back the touch controls in the smart speaker. This means Home Mini users will once again be able to long press the volume buttons on either side of the device to control the music, news, alarms, and phone calls. The new update is being rolled out for those who enrolled for Google's software preview programme.
In October, Google disabled the feature after a privacy issue was reported where the Google Home Mini would register touches even when no one is around, leading to recording sounds repeatedly. Thankfully, the search giant took care of the matter and released an update resolving the issue.
With the new touch function, Google Home Mini can wake up Google Assistant and issue a voice command. Right now, the touch-friendly side area of the Home Mini only works to control the volume, but now with a long press of the unmarked spots, you can have some extra functionality.
Google recently rolled out an update that allows you to use Home speakers as intercom systems in your house. People can broadcast their voice from Google Assistant on smartphones or voice-activated speakers like Google Home.
