Google acquired a small startup called Undecidable Labs last month whose co-founder and chief executive Cathy Edwards is head of product and engineering for Google’s image search tool, reports Bloomberg.
Though the terms of the deal remain undisclosed, Undecidable Labs was until now developing technology that was “focused on turning online searches into purchases’, says the report citing unnamed sources.
Image search which has been a part of Google for 15 years has suddenly become a hot area on the back of rising popularity of artificial intelligence and hence the acquisition that suggests that the search engine company is hoping to make Google Images a little more of a lucrative business for the company.
From Apple to Microsoft to Facebook and Twitter, every big name in the tech industry is currently exploring artificial neural networks. Google itself has been incorporating it into more and more of its services, such as Google Photos and Google Translate.
Edwards previously worked as director of engineering at Apple, where she worked on Apple products like the App Store, the Apple TV, iTunes, and Apple Maps. Undecidable Labs has an office in San Francisco and had raised less than $1 million in funding.
