Flipkart founders Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal have been jointly named "Asian of the Year 2016" by the Singapore-based newspaper The Straits Times as part of a group called the "The Disruptors".
Every year the publication recognises people driving their business with innovative technology and those that have disrupted traditional business model for the benefit of end consumers. The other names on the list include Nadiem Makarim of Go-Jek, Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling of Grab, Tan Min-Liang of Razer and Pony Ma of Tencent.

It validates our commitment to creating a world-class internet company that is transforming the lives of Indians by making a better quality of life both accessible and affordable to them. Flipkart’s innovative steps, aimed at transforming commerce in India through technology, have truly disrupted the market and it makes us proud to be recognised for this achievement. We accept this honour on behalf of all Indians,” said Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal in a joint statement.
According to the award citation, "The Disruptors" have made the inevitable march of technology easier to understand and accepted by millions of people.
In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was felicitated with the award and in 2015, it was awarded posthumously to Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's founding father.
