In a yet another attempt to curb fake news, Facebook has added a new feature that will block Pages that spread fake news from advertising on the platform. The company said in a blog post, "If Pages repeatedly share stories marked as false, these repeat offenders will no longer be allowed to advertise on Facebook."
Blocking ads from fake news pages is a step to reduce false news and hoaxes being spread, said Facebook. The company also blocks advertisers from running ads that link to stories marked as false by third-party fact-checking organizations.
The company said it will fight false news in three areas:
-Disrupting the economic incentives to create false news.
-Building new products to curb the spread of false news.
-Helping people make more informed decisions when they encounter false news.
The company has already disabled modified link previews and recently it also demoted video click bait stories that appear on News Feed. And now this new feature is a win-win situation for Facebook.
“Today’s update helps to disrupt the economic incentives and curb the spread of false news, which is another step towards building a more informed community,” the company said.
