BANGALORE, INDIA: Engineering colleges in India focus more on job placement of the students instead of building their skills and research capabilities, reveals the IET-Feedback Consulting Annual Report. Around 40% of the engineering graduates end up with jobs in sales/ marketing/ HR, estimates the study.
Some of key findings of the survey conducted among the academia, industry and parents were:
IT/ ITES, Manufacturing, Electrical/ Electronics and Analytics, Hi-Tech & e-Commerce remained the top 4 sectors visiting the engineering campuses in 2014 and 2015.
Increased intake has been recorded in Core engineering (civil, electrical, mechanical, etc.) and niche engineering (biotech, textile, leather, etc.), while computer-oriented streams ( Comp. Science, IT, Electronics & Communication, etc.) saw reduction in intake.
More women took admission in engineering courses in 2014 as compared to the previous year. 31% more women opted for computer-oriented streams than core engineering streams.

The report recommends a time-bound action plan to shift focus to innovation and excellence in engineering education in India:
- Build research capacities
- Accelerate the accreditation
- Focus more on higher order skills and creativity
- Encourage women to enter engineering
- Build more industry-academia collaborations
