Apple is developing its own device display screens for the first time, according to a report from Bloomberg. The report says that Apple has a secret manufacturing facility near its headquarters in California and has made a huge investment in this technology.
MicroLED screens are flat panel displays that make gadgets thinner, brighter and use less power compared with current OLED displays. The iPhone maker has code-named the secret project as T159, which will be overseen by Lynn Youngs, who is in charge of iPhone and Apple Watch screen technology. The report said that the California-based company will be using the technology in wearables first.
The report states that Apple is making a "significant investment" in the new technology with an eye toward including them in devices like the iPhone or Apple Watch in a few years. The move will surely hurt a range of suppliers, from screen makers like Samsung, Japan Display, Sharp and LG Display to companies like Synaptics that produce chip-screen interfaces.
Meanwhile, Apple is expected to release three new iPhone models in 2018 that come with 3D sensing technology and aesthetics similar to iPhone X.
