Those who own an iPhone 6, 6s, 6 Plus, and 6s Plus, and are experiencing sudden shutdowns in their devices, just need to update their software to iOS 10.2.1. Yes, according to Apple, this will resolve the shutdown issues.
Apple has been trying to find the problem, since January when the iOS 10.2.1 version was released.
As per the TechCrunch report, "the iOS 10.2.1 update has resulted in an 80 percent reduction of unexpected shutdowns on the iPhone 6s and a 70 percent reduction of unexpected shutdowns on the iPhone 6."
For the past several months, many iPhone 6 and 6s users were facing the problem of a sudden closure, forcing users to plug the devices into a plug to switch on the iPhone.
According to the report, the problem was reportedly caused by an uneven power delivery from old batteries, which was triggering an emergency shutdown. While the old batteries are unable to handle the subsequent spikes in power, new batteries are left unaffected, suggesting standard hardware degradation in lithium-ion cells.
The iOS 10.2.1 brings a new feature that allows users who experience unexpected shutdowns to restart their phone. It's basically a partial fix that is expected to extend the lifecycle of older iPhone 6 and 6s devices.
Apple is also reportedly planning to add a "service battery" notice to the battery information tool found in the Settings app under Battery, helping owners diagnose their hardware.
Apple also wanted users to know that these shutdowns are not a safety issue, so customers should not be alarmed if it happens. “It is important to note that these unexpected shutdowns are not a safety issue, but we understand it can be an inconvenience and wanted to fix the issue as quickly as possible. If a customer has any issues with their device, they can contact AppleCare.”
Last year, Apple faced a similar situation that had the same shutdown symptoms, but that resulted in a battery recall of some devices.
