The official Android 7.0 OTA update has started rolling out but only for those with the latest Google Nexus device. For rest, it’s going to take some more time.
The Android 7.0 Nougat promises to be one of the best OS upgrades by Google, as it adds new features like allowing two apps to be run on the same screen at once, and it tweaks all the previous Marshmallow goodies launched last year. This new firmware is now live for all the following Nexus models: Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Google Pixel C, Nexus Player and General Mobile 4G.
Google has also listed the first smartphone that will run Android Nougat right out of the box, the New LG V20 device. But other device owners will have to wait for manufacturers to carry out their own checks before they make it possible to install the code.
The situation poses a challenge to Google, which wants as many users as possible to upgrade. According to the company’s own figures, only 15 percent of Android devices in use got the previous version of Android.
The Android 7.0 Nougat will pack the following new features: multi-window support, Quick Switch, Unicode 9.0 – new emojis, Vulkan API for low-level fast graphics, built-in Virtual Reality (VR) support, improved Doze for better battery life, new notifications shade look with support for customizable quick settings, quick-reply / direct-reply notification support, automatic notifications bundling that will get rid of notification rows shown by a single app, data saver toggle, long-press to interact with notifications, customization support for display density and font-size controls to make everything easier to view/read, file-based encryption, Direct Boot that will start critical applications even if your phone is locked, and many other new functions as well.
