Amazon Europe commits to additional support of over $2.5M for India’s fight against COVID-19

Amazon has committed to leveraging its scale and resources to support employees and communities in India. The rising cases in India have created panic and a lack of resources. Thus, Amazon's business in Europe has committed $2.5 million. The amount will go to support people in COVID-19 impacted Indians. The e-commerce giant will use the amount to purchase and transport medical supplies using its global logistics network. The company has committed to purchase, airlift and deliver some of the critical medical equipment identified by the Government of India and local charities.

The company will deliver oxygen concentrators from Italy, ventilators from the UK, and nebulisers and inhalation devices from Germany. It will also provide these products to its frontline workers and local charities. They, in turn, will help those infected with COVID-19 across multiple cities in India; thereby supporting the capacity of hospitals, medical facilities and public institutions.

This support is in addition to 100 ventilators worth $3.8M that Amazon has already procured. Its global resources in the US as part of the company's commitment are helping India fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon India is also working closely with the Indian Red Cross. This is under the guidance of Niti Aayog and the MoHFW, who are defining the distribution plan for these ventilators.

Amazon will also work closely with Medtronic (MT) to airlift oxygen units into India. “We expect the consignment to enter the country in the next two weeks. Amazon India is working to identify the hospitals with the most urgent needs so that we can partner with MT for end-to-end delivery, installation, maintenance and training of personnel who will use these machines,” said an Amazon spokesperson.

“With the urgency of adding to the medical infrastructure and capacity for Indian hospitals fighting against COVID-19’s severe second spike, we decided to urgently source, import and donate 100 ventilators to hospitals that MoHFW identified. We hugely appreciate the quick response from the MoHFW to help identify the most compatible models, expediting the shipment import into India and coordination with agencies of MoHFW to allocate these where they are needed most. We are also doing more and are committed to supporting our country in the fight against COVID-19”, said Amit Agarwal, Global SVP & Country Head, Amazon India.
