An IIT or an IIM tag is not what makes you an entrepreneur, in fact 83.6 percent of Indian entrepreneurs fall in "others" category when compared with IITs or IIMs. An average technology entrepreneur in Asia’s third-largest economy is a male aged between 28 and 29. By the time his venture gets funded, he is over 32, according to data from Delhi-based startup Xeler8.
Almost 50 percent of Indian entrepreneurs are graduates, and many of them hold masters’ degree as well. However, contrary to the commonly held perception, most of these entrepreneurs have studied at non-elite colleges.
In fact, graduates from premium schools form a very small percent of entrepreneurs in India, which is 16.4 percent.
Xeler8, surveyed over 2,300 firms for this study. The sample startups operate in various sectors, including e-commerce, food technology, fin-tech, healthcare, agriculture technology, ad technology, data analytics, and gaming. The sample also includes large players like Flipkart, OYO Rooms, Snapdeal, and MuSigma.
The study also highlighted that entrepreneurship in the country is heavily male-dominated with less than 9 percent women, just like Silicon Valley.
