| According to a study, one-fifth ( 1\5) of the world's GDP that is 12 trillion dollars will be spent on projects during this year. Many large organisations now have their own PMCoE (Project Management Centre of Excellence). However, other than the IT sector, the kowledge / awareness about PM is very low in India. How can the organisastions proceed to set-up their own PMCoE? Eventhough there are many stakeholders across the organisation, is a CIO better equipped to set up such a practice in the company. |

| PMCoE setting up will require skill sets of Project, IT as well as Security Management. Anyone having these skills will be suited for the job. Stakes being high and also for better accountability it should not be left to CIO, but a seperate person should carry out this responsibility. |

Project management is all about completing a project within time and money budget with best utilization of resources i.e. manpower, material, money etc. Where project manager should not only have knowledge of project management techniques, but also should have subject/domain knowledge and authority to deal with timely arrangement quality project resources.
Therefore in my opinion project management need a thorough understanding and skill set of project subject/domain and a person possessing the domain skill set can be a good project manager rather than a CIO who knows project management techniques. For example my company wants to setup a power project, whereas person below than CEO cannot manage the project. Rest all are resources including technology specifically IT also.

The CIO can definitely lead by example towards institutionalization of Project Management as a discipline.
Most people understand project management as the simple use of a tool like Microsoft Project or Primavera, which is not the case. Project Management is a mindset and a way of life when an enterprise and its constituents monitor and drive results by focusing on each and every task with interdependencies leading to efficient execution consistently.
The IT organization is subjected to this every day with multiple projects and the learning here can be applied to other projects within the company. A few steps that can help towards this objective are:
1. Educate the teams on what is Project Management 2. Help them understand how they impact the project 3. Identify and communicate dependencies 4. Create a transparent method of creating visibility 5. Deploy tools that can be used to share information 6. Insist in updates every day/task completion; it takes only 5 minutes in a day 7. Report exceptions and status to senior management 8. Take feedback from involved team members on how their performance is impacted by this process
Just a 10% increase in execution efficiency can make a significant impact on the revenue or profitability of a company. |
