Ravi Pandit chairman and group CEO of KPIT Cummins comes across as an
easygoing, pleasant man. But beneath that sunny countenance, hides a
person of grit, who wants to take his company to the international field as a major player
The foundation of KPIT Cummins can be traced to Kirtane & Pandit, a
chartered accounting firm established by his father. After finishing his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Pandit joined the firm in the 1970's.
.
Given the exposure to computers at the MIT, and also because of Pandit's own interest, KPIT turned its attention towards computerized management consulting.
Explains Pandit, “At that time we were in non-computerized consulting
because our clients were small and couldn't afford computers because of
the high cost. But then in the mid-eighties the personal computer
revolution happened and we saw room for growth and changed tracks to head into information technology.”
He adds, “Initially for almost three years we worked with Indian
companies, helped them converting their management and accounting system into computerized format. Then we started working for international companies abroad, and as it is said, the rest is history.”
For Ravi Pandit the shift to information technology was natural. While
doing his MS (Management) from MIT, he developed interest in technology, and even before joining KPIT he started an IT consulting firm. Though he envisioned that the company would grow, he still thinks there is lot many mountains still left to climb."I think we still have a long way to go," he says. “I want to build a good team, do good work for my customers and others. I want to grow as much as one can grow. There is lot that needs to be achieved.”
Always a topper in college and universities, he was also an avid
sportsperson and represented his college, the Brihan Maharashtra Commerce College (BMCC), in various sports like cricket. He was also a judo champion and a middle-distance runner as well.
Trekking is one of Pandit's major hobbies. “In my childhood, we spend time mostly in the Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar area so I have been a walker for a long time. Also it's a good hobby as it is not strenuous like any other sports and also it leaves you in peace with nature and yourself, so which is good. I have trekked the Western Ghats in India and also have trekked a lot in the US too.”
Being passionate about nature and environment, Pandit, in association with the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture, is trying to save the environment and make Pune the most attractive destination.
For him it is only the beginning of the road, and he knows he has 'miles to trek' before he grows as much as one can grow.
