In what way can enterprises leverage the power of the Internet to enhance business?
Some enterprises believe they can do it on their own, but later they realize the Internet is pretty complicated. Performance is inconsistent and telecom provider cannot solve it for you. At the same time it is expensive to try to provision centrally for the erratic inflow of data traffic. Mostly, enterprises end up investing resources considering peak traffic requirements, and it is usually unused. What they seek is a concept that can solve their content delivery mechanism in a logical way. Akamai believes that it is not about data center, but a network-network issue, and so what they need is a distributed solution, as Akamai is the only distributed solution provider. We have an approach that is fundamentally different.
How does Akamai help enterprise reduce the physical infrastructure?
That's one of our prime selling propositions. With Akamai's managed services, there's no infrastructure to build or deploy. We can have you integrated on our platform in just a few days. Typically, the physical infrastructure for enterprises includes facilities, hardware, software, and people. These are mostly wasted in trying to manage the Internet and getting the site up and running, rather than being utilized in building better applications. We tell our clients that it is better to 'outsource' this hassle to us, who have a well-defined expertise in the domain. It is our job to make the Internet work better for you. Akamai has created a digital operating environment for the Web. Our global platform of thousands of specially equipped servers helps the Internet withstand the crush of daily requests for rich, dynamic, and interactive content, transactions, and applications.

What are the typical requirements of your customers?
One of the primary concerns of our clients is how to efficiently and speedily deliver content, both data and voice, online. Next is how to scale up the ability to handle traffic and provide value. People also start to think how to align business processes with the dynamic content online. For media content delivery providers, the main challenge is to have the website up and running even under the onslaught of heavy traffic.

Akamai's robust algorithms detect and avoid Internet problem spots and vulnerabilities. Our managed solutions accelerate applications and help media providers' monetire media assets quickly. Is DR planning more of a business challenge or a technological one?
That's an interesting way of phrasing it. I think it is more of a business challenge, because there are technical answers but they will be in place only if you have done a review of how you want to do your business.

What sort of a DR plan do you have for yourself?
We have a highly distributed system that has no single point of failure. Even if we were to shut down our network operation center (NOC), the network will keep running. We have four NOCs across the globe including one in Bangalore. We monitor it, but we don't make minute-by-minute decisions. We serve and deliver content and accelerate applications from 3,000 locations and none of them are critical day-to-day. Some Akamai node will still serve our end users even if one of them is down.
