iPhone is 'over priced' in India
While iPhone is priced at $199 (Rs 8,358) in the US, in India it will be priced at Rs. 31000 to Rs. 36000, much to the displeasure of eagerly waiting mobile enthusiasts

Price is extremely high in India when buying through these companies. In USA, 3GS, 16GB, black color is easily available for USD 500..i think. Any idea how much is the custom duty? I want to buy 2 phones for personal use.

no not really becuase in the USA you have to select a plan from At&t its like renting a phone here you can only buy it.. because people cant be trusted in india, plus its from the states so they have to change it to GSM. i live in the Usa and am from india and i dont think it really matters u guys ought to get your facts straight(gemma)

Its real fun to read the below comments but lemme jot a few points to all the people especially those who mentioned that they would buy a hi-fi laptop instead... 1. If you would get a laptop, then why dont you connect ur headset to the laptop and ride your bikes??? 2. iPhone is an american product and hence sells cheap here... If it would have been a neutral product like Nokia N95, its price range is alomst the same in both countries as Nokia is a Finnish product. My frnd bought an N95 for 25K in India and here it goes for over $500... which makes sense. Also such price difference is true for all products like laptops, ipod etc... 3. As the gentleman below showed you the arithematics of how much people here pay for iPhone over two years, in India its really fair to be priced that way. 4. Abt contracts in India, I am pretty sure that there is no way to track the contract holders in case they default unlike here where all contracts are tracable. So it doesnt make sense to make it a contract model which could be paid in easy installments. Hope this thing would help in justifying the cost of iPhone in India... I know its priced a little on the higher side but you have to pay a price for anything new and innovative if you want it the first :)

These kind of phones are not to be used by the poor people of India. Any pricing strategy for such innovative products are OK, as the companies also are in a learning process. Will any of the complainers explain why in the US, it costs more than $ 30 (Rs. 1300) to have hair cut, where as in India you can have a decent cut for Rs. 20 - 30?? Are all americans being cheated by the barbers there?? There are many reasons for the pricing a particular product including huge profits, and no need to crib without understaning everything

Please guys, Both carriers have to pay big customs duties for importing iphone to India.Dont you people forget those people in white uniforms? I paid Rs.26000 in US when Iphone came out last year. Apple made a killing from US consumers. Dont forget about the 2yr contract and $200 early termination fee+ $100 monthly charge to keep the iphone!!! I think monthly charges in India is very lower than USA. In order to keep my iphone for 2yrs in USA, I have to pay $2400 in monthly charges. At least monthly charges are low in India.

hello if any vodafone or airtel employee is reading these messages, i am addressing to them, dont you (corporate b.....s) think that with the cost of iphone in India you mentioned, I can get a hi-fi laptop with all latest features in it. Idiotic marketing strategy of both the tele-corporates.

Itis better to forget IPhone. The pricing is based on the exhorbitantly high duty which India Levies on all the import items. In other countries this is not at all a problem. That is why the grey market thrives, since they escape paying all this.

I was waiting for IPhone since a long time, when i first saw it on a news channel, I was so eager to purchase it, But now when Vodafone and Airtel declare the price, I am so worry, How i will complete my desire. I am so unhappy with so much price. News channel told that it wil availbale in India near About 8500-10000rs. Its cost is so high. A person who belong from a medium family can not afford it. In Hindustan Times I read there are many peoples who have fast for getting the Iphone. But the vodaphone and Airtel Broke the heart not only me and all of those person who was waiting for it. The person who have black money or belong to a such family where this price is so low, can afford this price.
