NEW DELHI, INDIA: By January 2010, chipmaker AMD will replace the RD790 (790FX) and RS880D with its new 8-series chipsets. The new series, RD890, will go through the EVT (engineering verification test) and DVT (design verification test) in June and July this year. The company aims at kicking off mass production of the series by November. AMD will unveil the new RD890 chipset series at par with functionalities now boasted by its quad-core AM3-based processors. RD890, which is expected to aim at pocketing a chunk of the high-end market, will support DDR3 memory and HyperTransport 3.0, Digitimes said in a report. Currently, AMD uses a combination of 770 chipset and entry-level AM2+ CPUs to cover the entry-level market and is letting its 790FX chipset serve the high-end market. Apart from the proposed launch of the RD890 8-series chipsets, AMD also plans to roll out the 785G chipset. Expected to happen by September this year, the chip is currently under design verification test. The company has said that it expects to start enter mass production in August this year. Besides, a new SB800 series southbridges to pair with 8 series chipsets will also roll out of the AMD labs. The report added that the SB850 is already going through engineering verification test and will be ready for January next year. The SB810, meanwhile, will undergo engineering verification test in July and roll out by May in 2010.
