EINDHOVEN, THE NETHERLANDS: Philips has introduced a prototype of an integrated CMOS photon detector which promises for a wide range of uses in high resolution scientific imaging. A group of researchers at the Dutch major has reportedly integrated as many as 8,188 analog photon counters on a single CMOS die so that each diode is individually addressable.

The researchers have said that the integrated device is a 30W digital single-proton avalanche detector (SPAD), which can possibly act as a building block for next-generation medical, automotive and genetic imaging systems. It comes across as a digital design with an integrated eight picosecond timer and does not require a separate digital readout ASIC, they added.

The researchers are now hoping to zero in on partners to take this technology out on a commercial basis. Elaborating on the technology, Rob Ballizany, chief executive of digital photon counting at Philips Technology, said that the team of researchers will use the chip as a block in a larger 8x8 array they plan to prototype by the end of the year.

It is expected that the integrated CMOS photon detector will have the capability to turn power modules that deliver higher resolutions than are currently possible on medical PET scanners. They could also be used to deliver new automotive night vision systems or high throughput DNA testers, said a report.
