TAIPEI, TAIWAN: Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has revised its schedule to phase out many of the CPUs in the Phenom II X4 900 series and also decided to launch a new model in 2010.
Company sources said that AMD already stopped taking orders for the Phenom II X4 910 (2.6GHz/95W) and 945 (3.0GHz/125W) CPU in the fourth quarter of 2009. AMD will stop completely shipments of these in the second quarter of 2010.
While AMD will stop placements of orders for the Phenom II X4 965 (3.4GHz/140W) and 925 (2.8GHz/95W) CPUs in the first quarter of 2010, orders for the Phenom II X4 955 (3.2GHz/125W) are planned to be halted in the second quarter of 2010.
According to sources, AMD will launch a 95W Phenom II X4 955 processor in the second quarter of 2010.
Apart from the Phenom II X4 900 series, AMD has decided to discontinue taking orders, in 2010, for many of its CPUs in the Phenom II X4 800, X3 700, X2 500, Athlon II X4 600, and X3 400 series. That will leave the Phenom II X4 820, Phenom II X3 740 and Phenom II X2 in AMD's CPU offerings.
AMD is set to launch the 80W Phenom II X2 555 in the fourth quarter of 2009, and 95W Athlon II X2 445 and 95W Athlon II X4 640 in the second quarter of 2010.
Industry observes have reported that AMD is also planning to launch its 6-core desktop CPU – codenamed Thuban – in the second quarter of 2010. The features of Thuban include 45nm process and socket AM3 packaging, 6MB L3 cache, six 512KB L2 cache, as well as a core frequency of 2.8GHz.
