NEW DELHI, INDIA: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has called for mobile number portability (MNP) in the country by June 2009 to be implemented in phased manner.

TRAI, in its Draft Request For Proposal (RFP) to the Department of Telecom, has suggested the selection of an operator for providing and operating MNP solutions.

"The Mobile Number Portability Clearing House Administrator (MCHA) should be licensed through a competitive bidding process," according to the regulator.

TRAI also recommended a cap of less than 10 per cent on the equity holding of telecom service providers in the proposed third party operator, similarly the operator should not be allowed to hold 10 per cent or more stake in the any of the telecom companies.

The center wants to have number portability in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai by the fourth quarter of 2008. TRAI has recommended the expansion of the number portability to all regions.

It is a good idea. It was earlier also put to the market, but seems pressure from the service providers, facility not made to the public. There are other areas also where TRAI can introduce customer friendly services. Make it faster.
