BANGALORE, INDIA: India would be as good as any developed country of today, by 2040. Some states in the country have better life expectancy rate than many of the US states. This is the message that the 'Future Beckons' conference 2009, organized by TEDIndia, which kick started in Mysore today, has to convey to the world.

The conference presents a new vision over the history, present and the future of the country.

Global health expert Hans Rosling predicted that Asia would play a dominant role in the coming 40-50 years. Comparing the income growth of developed countries like U.S., U.K. and Japan with China and India, he presented the slated growth prospects for the country.

He forecast that by July 27, 2047, average Indian citizen will (possibly and probably) catch up with the average American citizen. But in order to reach there, India should not forget the poor in Uttar Pradesh, remove inequalities through social investments. Diversity is India's primary strength, he reminded.

In the second presentation by Devdutt Pattanaik, mythologist, the focus was on the the correlation between culture and business. Talking about the "business of mythology" he said that our mythologies reveal about our practices.

Pattanaik narrated a mythological story where Ganesha and Kartikeya race around world. While Kartikeya went on trip around the world on his peacock, Ganesha saw the world in his parents and walked around them. This is the difference between 'the world' and 'my world'.

So the world tells us about how things work, and 'my world' tells us about why things work. Similarly, the western myth of Theseus talks about becoming the hero in the life time, because it is one life, while a myth from India, teaches that "nothing lasts forever - not even death. Our belief comes from culture and that changes our behavior, be its a straight philosophy of mission and template, or the curvy methodology of opportunity and taste.

The third session by Mark Kristensen brought a new thought of how failure and acceptance of it plays an important role. He said, "Go fail with a child, as kids, we are taught only how to succeed - but we need to be taught how to fail, too."

Lastly, Mallika Sarabhai with an entertaining and enthralling act of performance gave the message that how art can bridge the gap and help convey the message more clearly, be it about social issues such as poverty and violence. She said, "Art is not the cherry on the cake, but the yeast." She said that we all are either a victim or on top of the violence.
