6000 Andhra rural youth to be trained in IT

The Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge technologies will begin its first academic year this August to train about 6000 rural students in IT skills.

HYDERABAD, INDIA: A technology university established under the Information Technology department under the Institute for Electronic Governance (IEG) will begin its first six-year integrated course exclusively for the rural youths in Andhra Pradesh from August this year.

"This is one of our biggest learning initiatives. This will help bridge the gap and give quality education to rural youth at very nominal fees," said Shailendra Kumar Joshi, principal secretary to government, Information Technology and communications Department.

The six-year integrated course will take students who pass out from tenth standard. There would be no entrance test with the marks in SSC being the only criteria.

The initial two years will be utilized for enhancing technical and soft skills such as communication and language. In the next four years, a technical course will be provided with specializations in fields like IT, biotechnology and nano-technology.

Companies such as TCS, Satyam and Wipro are participating in the training program by training the 6000 students. They are being recruited right now, said Joshi.

Oracle has also allowed the free usage of its software for students. The three centers with capacity of over 2000 students each will be located at Basara, Idupulapaya and Nuzivedu.
