Enlightenment on environment (read Green IT) has remained the flavor of the season for sometime now. Companies are time and again talking about environment centric initiatives and ingraining them into their mission statements.

Rising economic woes have meant that companies would be looking at curtailing costs in order to maintain margins and sustain growth in turbulent times.

John Landau, senior vice president for Global Managed Services at Tata Communications shared his views on environment embracing initiatives undertaken by his entity with Prasad Ramasubramanian from CyberMedia News. Excerpts from the interview:

Do you feel that greener initiatives would face the spree of cost cutting undertaken by companies today?

No, I don't think so. People do not do green out of the goodness of their hearts. The businesses demand them today as green data centers, green networks save a lot of money for the company. If you look at the advent of telepresence, reduction of travel time for employees has been started by companies and so there have been a lot of initiatives which have commenced to go in the direction. So, cost cutting would never be done in that regard.

How is Tata Communications embracing Greener methodologies?

We are building a lot of data centers and we are focusing very hard on the best power sources, the best power management methodologies -- a very serious part of Green IT worldwide. It's in the interest of our company and in the interest of our customers that we embrace technologies which are helpful for the environment and in all these technologies -- efficiency is critical.

Talk on critical issues that your company faced and how following greener technology helped you overcome it?

It is more block and tackle; it's more engineering focused measurement and analysis, going to vendors and ensuring that they get performances in their departments, its building data centers with the best power sources. If you see, all this is basic stuff and there is no black magic to the whole thing.

Are we a tad late in embracing environment centric programs and companies going gaga over it?

It is never too late. Well, the talk of Green IT has been on for sometime now and the issue has become serious that I think its time we come up with something substantial to overcome this.
