BANGALORE, INDIA: Software companies have offered to share their technology expertise with the Karnataka police and have asked them for help to train the private security agencies which protect their offices.

The proposals were made by corporate honchos, who met top Karnataka government officials just a few hours after the last terrorist holding out at Mumbai's Taj Mahal hotel was eliminated on Saturday.

Karnataka's top cop, director general and inspector general of police R Srikumar welcomed the suggestions and promised the unstinted assistance of the police force as it gears up for extra measures to safeguard India's technology capital and other parts of the state.

Some 25,000 staff employed by private agencies provide security at software companies, including at the campuses of Infosys Technologies and Wipro, the country's second and third largest software exporters, respectively.

"The nature of the attacks in Mumbai shows that terrorism is not just a problem for the police. It is a military issue now," Srikumar observed, pointing to audacity of the terrorists in directly engaging in battle with the security forces.
