KATHMANDU, NEPAL: We are still in the early days of virtualization. Around 10 percent of servers are virtualized. Less than one percent of desktops are virtualized. The inhibitors are cost and complexity. These were some of the facts thrown up by Sumeet Khanna, Windows Server Lead, Microsoft India, in his presentation: Virtualization - Foundation for IT Innovation, during C-Change 2009.
"Today, we think of server virtualization, especially in the data center. We consolidate applications and see which ones are required from a critical aspect," he said.
Khanna also said that there should be a pool of people who can move from one technology area to another, seamlessly. "This gives the perspective of being a dynamic datacenter. From consolidation to business continuity on to a dynamic data center is the way."
While there is a lot of debate regarding cloud computing, Microsoft believes it would be a mix of applications -on-premise and in the cloud.
He added that all of Microsoft's products are being developed keeping software services in mind.
According to Microsoft, with server virtualization and application virtualization in place, it can be taken to the next level by doing user-centric computing and making it part of the dynamic IT.
